When thinking about redesigning your website, there is a common fear that many people have:

“Will I lose my SEO ranking if I change my website?”

You’re not alone. This is a very valid question, and one that is important to consider. A new website can be a powerful upgrade, but if your previous SEO ranking isn’t preserved intentionally, it could hurt your hard-earned progress. Redesigns, domain changes, and website migrations can all disrupt previous rankings. If not handled carefully, traffic can drop, rankings can disappear, and it could feel like you’re having to start from scratch—which is something we want to avoid.

Here at TourismTiger, we work meticulously to protect your SEO and preserve domain authority during a design. While we don’t follow a rigid SEO migration process, we thoughtfully and flexibly preserve, and often improve, your SEO performance when launching a new site.

Here’s how we do it.

Why SEO Preservation Matters

Domain authority is a search engine ranking that is given that predicts how likely a website will rank in search engine results pages. A higher score indicates a greater ability to rank well. This metric is extremely useful for determining your website’s overall strength when it comes to ranking and how competitive you are in comparison to other sites in your niche.

Your website’s SEO isn’t just a bunch of keywords; it’s a combination of content, structure, links, and domain trust that you’ve built up over time. This authority also tells Google that your site is worth showing to potential customers. It is a big part of how travelers find your tours online.

One of the worst consequences that comes from poor site migrations and careless redesigns is loss of this domain trust. Disappearing pages, broken links, and less visibility in search engines can cause disruption in a customer’s journey. This is why it is so essential to protect that authority during a website migration. You need to work with a team that knows how.

That’s where we come in.

Our SEO-Smart Approach to Website Redesigns

We don’t have a one size fits all checklist for SEO preservation, because we know that every business and website is different. Instead, we focus on a few core principles to preserve and strengthen SEO during a website migration.

We respect your existing SEO value.
During a website redesign, it’s our goal to respect your existing SEO value and not make major changes if things are already working well for you. Before we start building anything, we get a sense of what’s already working on your current site.

We don’t recommend completely deleting or replacing high-performing content. We will never wipe the slate clean without assessing what’s worth saving or improving. We will always look for opportunities to build on your success, not erase it.

We handle redirects carefully.
If a page URL changes, we will make sure that it’s redirected properly to avoid broken links. If your old page no longer exists and there’s no redirect, both users and search engines will hit a dead end. We will make sure that anyone who clicks an old link will land in the right place.

We preserve content strategically.
If you tell us that your previous, keyword-rich content is performing well, we won’t completely change it. Content is one of your biggest SEO assets. When we do update or rewrite content, we keep SEO in mind, including relevant keywords and enhancing the content that is already written. The goal is always to make your site more helpful.

We adapt to your needs.
For many clients, SEO is a top priority. For others, it’s more about user experience and branding. We adjust our focus based on what you need, while always keeping SEO in the conversation—especially if you’re already ranking and bringing in organic traffic.

Voices from the Team

To give you a behind the scenes look at how we think about SEO during a redesign, we asked a few of our team members to share their perspectives:

In simple terms, why are 301 redirects important during a website redesign?

“During a website redesign, the URLs of some pages might be changed for better structure. To prevent visitors from visiting the old URL, it’s important to set a redirect to the page. Besides, the redirection will keep the search engines up to date, thus the correct link will be used in the search results”.
— Sava, Developer

When you’re rewriting or refreshing content, how do you make sure you don’t lose its SEO value?

“I try to keep the same keyword focus and make sure the core message and structure stay clear. If something’s ranking well, I’m careful not to mess too much with headings or key phrases, I’ll just try and clean things up and improve where it makes sense.”
— Ari, Web Coordinator

How do you explain the importance of preserving SEO to clients who aren’t familiar with it and what do you do to ensure transparency around SEO throughout a project?

“When a client comes to us with an existing website, one of our first priorities is to identify and preserve any existing SEO value they’ve already built, we start with a thorough analysis of the current site to assess what’s working: this includes reviewing keyword rankings, backlinks, URL structure, and page performance (if clients are able to provide this info for us – there are some great tools such as Google Analytics that can help collect this type of data). From there, we make strategic decisions about what to retain, what to improve, and how to migrate that value to the new website.

Lots of people have the impression that SEO is a one-time task, but it’s not. It’s more like a journey, not a destination, so preserving what’s already working is just as important as improving what isn’t. Things like removing high-performing pages, changing URLs without redirects, or stripping key content during a redesign can have a negative impact on rankings. That’s why we’re careful to manage those transitions properly.

At the same time, our new builds are designed with SEO best practices from the get-go, from page speed and mobile optimization to content structure and metadata setup. We aim to set the site up for long-term success, not just a good-looking launch. Throughout the project, we keep clients informed with plain-language explanations so they understand what’s being done and why, without needing to be SEO experts themselves.”
— Bri, Project Team Manager
